Obituary for Jim Chilcutt
James (Jim) Harrison Chilcutt, age 83, died Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at home in Jefferson City. He had battled cancer and heart disease.
He was born on November 19, 1934 in Diamond, Missouri, a son of James Ramey and Mary Frances (Rodgers) Chilcutt. He was married on August 12, 1962 in Springfield, Missouri, to Barbara Frances Woods, who survives at the home. They raised three sons and enjoyed 55 years of married life together.
He was a 1953 graduate of Joplin High School in Joplin, Missouri, and he attended Missouri Southern. He served three years in the U. S. Army (16 months in Korea.)
He worked for 38 years at the Missouri Division of Employment Security, serving as Manager of the Job Service offices in Hannibal, Jefferson City, and Springfield. He retired in December 1996 as Manager of Administrative Services for the Missouri Department of Labor in Jefferson City.
He was a member, Deacon, and Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson City; a former member of the Evening Rotary Club, a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member, and was a Paul Harris Fellow; a past member of the Board of the Employment Security Credit Union; the American Legion Roscoe Enloe Post 5; the VFW Post 1003; the World’s Fair Preservation Society; the Jefferson City Park Department Resources Committee; the Historic Preservation Commission for the City of Jefferson; the Missouri Society of Military History, the Sons of Union Veterans Lillie Camp 6; a lifetime member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and a member of the Mosby Monroe Parsons Camp #718. He was also past President of the River City Collectors’ Guild and past Co-Director of the Friar Tuck Collectors’ Club; a past Chairman of the Capitol Area Chapter of the American Red Cross and a long-time blood donor; a past President of the Jefferson City Men’s Garden Club and a long-time member of the Missouri Botanical Gardens; and he was a board member of the Riverview Cemetery Association.
After retirement, he and Barbara were in the antique business. He was a gardener, enjoyed raising orchids, and was a Master Gardener. Jim was interested in all things old and historical. He wanted to know how and why things happened and the results. He had a great interest in archaeology, particularly, in Biblical archaeology.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Chilcutt; two sons, Bryan Rodgers Chilcutt (wife, Susan) of Columbia, Missouri and Darin Foster Chilcutt (wife, Jennifer) of Jefferson City, Missouri; two grandsons, Cameron Daniel Chilcutt of Jefferson City and Carson James Chilcutt of Columbia; one sister, Jo Helen Beauchamp of Springfield, Missouri, one brother, Don R. Chilcutt (wife, Charlotte) of Edmond, Oklahoma; one niece; and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Kevin Woods Chilcutt.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 until 11:00 am Saturday, February 24, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church with a memorial service following at 11:00 am with the Reverend Dr. David Henry officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 pm at Riverview Cemetery.
