Obituary for Robert Gammon

Robert Thomas Gammon, Sr., 80, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Friday, February 9th, 2018, in Jefferson City after a long battle with illness.

Robert, known as both “Bob” and “Tom” to friends over the years, was born on November 10, 1937 to James B. and Floy M. (Randolph) Gammon of St. Louis.

After attending Southwest High School in St. Louis, Bob served for 3 years in the U.S. Army as a military policeman. Upon returning to St. Louis, Bob worked in numerous fields before finding his calling in real estate, working first as a broker/agent and later retiring from the County of St. Louis as a real estate tax appraiser. Bob held active memberships in the National Rifle Association, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Masonic Temple.

Shortly after his retirement, Bob and his wife Nancy moved to Jefferson City, where he remained active as a volunteer at the Amtrak Station and both Capital Region Medical Center and the CRMC Goldschmidt Cancer Center. He was extremely proud of his 51 years of recovery from alcoholism, and his message of experience, strength, and hope helped countless others on the path to sobriety.

He is survived by his daughter, Christina (Gary Long) and grandchildren Brian and John; son, Robert Jr. and grandchildren Robert III and Andrew; son, Eric (Patricia) and grandchildren Jessica, Jennifer, and Eric Jr.; step-children, Todd Weddle, Anne Crowe, Eric Weddle, and Mark Weddle, and their children Chelsea, Andrew, Carter, Olivia, Ethan, Todd, Teresa, Miriah, Christine, and Brian; and great-grandchildren Noel Montgomery and Angelo Rodriguez.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, James and Floy; his brothers, William and James; and his beloved wife, Nancy Sue (Wilson) Gammon.

Family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 pm Saturday, February 24, 2017 at Freeman Mortuary with a Masonic Service held at 3:00 pm with the auspices of the Jefferson Lodge No. 43, A.F. & A.M. A Celebration of Life Service will follow with Chaplain Bart Larson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Bob’s name to the CRMC Goldschmidt Cancer Center.

Bob’s obituary will be published in the Sunday, February 18, 2018 News Tribune.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
