Barbara Wolken
Mrs. Barbara Lou Francis Wolken, age 84 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., was called to eternal life with Jesus her Lord and Savior on Monday, October 16, 2017 at home surrounded by her family.

Barbara was born December 7, 1932 in Jefferson City, Mo. a daughter of the late Thomas R. “Richard” Francis and Alma H. Ousley. She was united in marriage to Alfred “Tom” Wolken on June 11, 1960 at Immaculate Conception Church in Jefferson City, Mo.

A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, Barbara graduated from Jefferson City High School and attended Lincoln University.

She was member of Immanuel Baptist Church since 1943 where she taught Sunday school, served on the Trustees Committee, and helped with youth programs and other church activities.

Over the years, Barbara was employed as a proof reader with Exchange Bank, the secretary to the President of Tweedie Footwear Factory, a court reporter for the Missouri State Dept. of Liquor Control, the Director of the Missouri Dept. of Safety Responsibility and lastly, the Women’s Activity Director with the Missouri A.F.L.-C.L.O. for 24 years, retiring in 1997.

She was appointed to the Missouri Community Service Commission by Governor Mel Carnahan when the commission was formed in 1994 and served on the commission for a total of 16 years, 4 years as Vice-Chairman, and Chairman of the Service Committee for 12 years. She promoted public service and volunteerism throughout Missouri and began the “Make A Difference Day” movement.

Barbara loved being a Christian and helping in God’s work by telling the story of Jesus and seeing others become believers. She enjoyed making crafts with family and friends, dancing, boating at the lake, and raising her Maltese “furbabies” as her own children.
