Obituary for Adalene Morris

Adalene Peeler Morris, age 97 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Monday, Oct. 2, at St. Joseph's Bluffs. She previously resided at Fayette for many years.

She was born February 2, 1920, at Armstrong, the youngest of the four children of David H. and Frances Mansur Peeler.

Adalene graduated from Yates High School in 1937 and attended Central Business College in Sedalia. She worked at the State Fair and other jobs in Sedalia. In 1941, she moved to Washington, D. C., and worked for the government throughout the war.

She married her high school classmate, John Parks Morris, in June 1945. He enlisted in the Navy in 1939 and was on active duty in the Pacific throughout the war. During his Navy career, the family lived numerous places in the U.S. and overseas, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Bremerhaven, Germany. Parks was a Pearl Harbor survivor; he died in July 1991.

Throughout her life, Adalene enjoyed and excelled at creative activities such as cake decorating, china painting, collecting antiques and glassware, and quilting. Adalene and Parks spent many winter evenings finishing Adalene's handmade quilts which have become heirlooms for her children and grandchildren. Adalene also was a fine cook and an award-winning pie maker. She was a member of First Christian Church, Fayette.

Survivors include: one son, Jim Morris and his wife Marty who have lived in Jefferson City since 1975; five grandchildren: Brian Hill (Katie), Richmond, VA.; Collin Hill (Jennifer), Chesapeake, VA; Dr. Erin Morris, Lawrence, KS; Lauren Morris, Chicago, IL; Adam Morris (Dr. Laura E. Morris, MD), Columbia; one nephew, Bill McKee, Sonora, CA; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one daughter, Martha Ann Carmichael in November, 2004 at the age of 55.

Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 1:00 until 2:00 pm Sunday, October 29, 2017.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Sunday, October 29, 2017 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Paula Ritchie, First Christian Church Fayette, officiating. Graveside services will follow at Sharon Cemetery in Armstrong, Mo. with the Reverend LeAnn Sapp officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church of Fayette, Mo.
