Obituary for Richard J. Dunn

Mr. Richard Joseph Dunn, age 91 years, of Holts Summit, Mo. passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Heisinger Bluffs.

Richard was born on June 20, 1926 in Jefferson City, Mo. a son of the late Burnham, Sr. and Mary J. (Kaiser) Dunn. He was married February 21, 1950 in Jefferson City, Mo. to Betty Lorene Wilson, who preceded him in death on April 4, 2015.

A lifelong resident of the central Missouri area, Richard was a graduate of St. Peters High School.

After high school he served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Richard was employed for over 30 years with Capital City Telephone Company, which later became United Telephone Company until his retirement on June 1, 1985. He began his professional career as a lineman installing phones throughout central Missouri and was recognized for his customer service. He went on to receive more education through the company and started working as a cable splicer until his retirement. He was very proud to be a part of a union and was member of the IBEW Local #2.

He was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church, the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Basinger/Sone Memorial Post 1003. He was passionate about his democratic party and helped restore the Old Providence Baptist Cemetery.

Richard’s main passion was being outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and camping with family. He was an avid quail and turkey hunter and loved having bird dogs throughout his life. He traveled the state quail hunting with his dogs and started hunting turkey the first season it was available in Missouri by camping in Texas County, Missouri with Betty. Through the years he could always be talked into a duck, deer, turkey or quail hunt with family. He could fix anything with his hands and was very particular when he worked on any cars. Richard cherished time in his vegetable garden, playing pitch and barbequing (occasionally he would even share his basting sauce recipe).

Survivors include: his son, William Bryan “Bill” Dunn (wife Becky) of Jefferson City, Mo.; his daughter, Sue Ann Wilson (husband Edward) of Holts Summit, Mo.; five grandchildren, Melissa McGinnis (husband David), Bryan Dunn (wife Missy), Matthew Dunn, Angela Wilson (husband Scott), and Samantha Cobble (husband Drew); and six great-grandchildren, Chloe, Edward, Victoria, Hunter, Hudson and Ihler.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Betty and one brother, Burnham “Bunny” Dunn, Jr.

Visitation will be held at St. Andrew Catholic Church from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2017.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2017 at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Holts Summit with the Reverend Joe Corel officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held at St. Andrews Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Andrew Catholic Church, 400 St Andrews Lane, Holts Summit, Mo. 65043.
