Obituary for Joan T. Elliott
Joan Todd Elliott, 85, of Jefferson City passed away July 8 at St. Joseph’s Bluffs in Jefferson City after living with end stage renal disease since 2004.
She is survived by daughter Carol Ann Elliott (husband Joseph W. Howell) of Imperial, PA; son Dr. James Todd Elliott of Columbia; daughter Elizabeth Chaffin Elliott (husband Curtis J. Stegeman) of Jefferson City; and grandson Robert Elliott Chan of Mesa, AZ.
Her husband of 58 years, Edward George Elliott, Jr., preceded her in death on March 29, 2013.
Joan (nee Patricia Joan Todd) was born December 31, 1931 in Bronaugh, Vernon County, Missouri, the second child of Floyd Chaffin Todd and Hazel McDowell Todd. Joan lost both her father and younger brother James Chaffin Todd before she was three years old. Her mother, a schoolteacher, raised her two daughters, Joan and her sister Carol Jean, as a single parent in Milo, Missouri. During her high school years, Joan lived with extended family members briefly in Kansas City, then Phoenix, Arizona. She completed her last two years of high school at Phoenix Union High School and first two years of college at Phoenix Junior College. She finished college at the University of Missouri, earning a bachelor’s degree in Business Education in 1954. At MU, she met her future husband Ed through her roommate Brenda who dated Ed’s twin brother Brownlee. Ed and Joan married August 15, 1954 at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Nevada, Missouri.
Ed and Joan settled in Jefferson City in the early 1960s. Joan began working at Central Bank soon afterward and retired as Executive Assistant in 1993 after over 30 years of service. After retirement, she and Ed enjoyed attending MU football games, being with friends, and eating country church suppers in and around Cole County. Joan served Grace Episcopal Church as a vestry member, being elected the first female senior warden, and Altar Guild member. She volunteered for hospice and the Special Learning Center in Jefferson City.
Joan had an extraordinary gift of bonding with all kinds of people through her intense curiosity and interest in their lives and families, and her remarkable memory of the minute details people shared with her. Her curiosity and interest in others always won out over any opportunity she might have used to complain about her infirmities. She displayed unfailing kindness, caring, and love in her relationships, which drew people to her and causes heartfelt grief at her passing.
Graveside services and interment will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Riverview Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Grace Episcopal Church with the Reverend Bill Nesbit, Reverend Dr. Paula Hartsfield, and Reverend Harvel Sanders presiding. A luncheon reception and visitation will follow the service in the parish hall from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the National Kidney Foundation, www.kidney.org, or Grace Episcopal Church.
