Obituary for James R. Fleming

James R.  Fleming
Mr. James R. Fleming, age 80 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Friday, June 16, 2017 at his home.

Jim was born on August 24, 1936 in Poplar Bluff, Mo. the son of the late William and Irene (Putnam) Fleming. He was raised on a rural farm by his grandparents, Walter and Pearl Putnam, in Callaway County, Mo.

He graduated as valedictorian of his class from New Bloomfield High School, where he excelled in both baseball and track.

Jim began a career working for the United States Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. as a computer programmer. He provided on-site support for the Joint Chiefs of Staff communications computers at the Pentagon during his career that spanned over 30 years. Military assignments his last 18 years included installing computer LANs (Local Area Network) at military Command-Posts in Saudi Arabia, Bosnia, and Somalia. Once Jim retired from the Department of Defense, he returned to Jefferson City to be closer to family and enjoyed living life at a slower pace.

He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge, 513.

Survivors include: one aunt, Bea Putnam, several cousins, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Private graveside services and interment will be conducted at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
