Obituary for David L. Whitener

David L. Whitener
Mr. David Lee Whitener, of Taos, Mo., age 73 years, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Villa Marie.

David was born on March 7, 1944 in Waynesville, Mo., the son of Martha Campbell. He graduated from Ritenour High School of St. Louis in 1962 and went on to graduate from Linn State Technical College. David was employed with Sheltered Workshop for many years and it was there that he met the love of his life, Marilyn Schaefer.

On May 18, 1974 David and Marilyn were married. They resided in Taos, Mo. for over 30 years. David and Marilyn suffered serious crippling injuries in separate accidents as young people. Despite these handicaps they lived productive lives with the help of the Taos Community. Their courage and drive were an inspiration for all that knew them.

David was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #6430. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards and was a “professional” at checkers, beating anyone who dared to challenge him to a game.

Survivors include: his wife of 43 years, Marilyn Whitener; his sister, Donna (Bernard) Groner of Jefferson City, Mo.; his mother, Martha Campbell of Jefferson City, Mo.; and ten nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, David V. Whitener, in 2015.

Visitation will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos, Mo. from 10:00 until 11:00 am Monday June 26, 2017.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 am Monday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Reverend John W. Groner officiating. Graveside services will follow at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
