Obituary for Paul Scott Rogers

Paul Scott Rogers
Paul Scott Rogers, age 92 years, a long-time resident of Jefferson City, MO, passed away Monday, May 22, 2017 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital.

Paul was born in St. Louis, Missouri on April 9, 1925 to R. Clifford Rogers and Willa (Carrick) Rogers. He spent his early years in Ontario, Canada, where his father was a Presbyterian Minister.

Paul graduated from high school in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania in 1943. He subsequently enrolled in the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Long Island, NY where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Engineering. He served with the Merchant Marines from 1943-1945 and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserves in 1945.

Paul earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Oklahoma and later an MBA from Rutgers University. He worked for Westinghouse Corporation for over 35 years and moved to Jefferson City with the opening of the new Westinghouse plant in 1971. He retired from Westinghouse in 1987.

Paul was a long-time member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and adult Sunday School teacher. He was also known as a talented, self-taught pianist and regularly played for chapel and memorial services at Heisinger Bluffs. Paul’s other interests, in addition to wife-adoring and son-raising, included photography, wood working, gardening, fixing nearly anything and reading the Wall Street Journal.

In the memories we cherish of Paul, Dad, and Gramps, may we know peace as surely he continues to watch over us from heaven itself. He was a man of steady integrity, abiding love, deep faith and wise counsel—a faithful steward of the time and talent God entrusted to him.

Paul was a loving husband to his wife, Gwynne I. Rogers—who he married on December 20, 1947 at the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. He was also a dedicated Dad to their three boys [Scott (1950), Russ (1953) and Don (1958)], a proud grandfather of Rachel, Nathan, Lindsay, Travis and Megan and a thrilled great-grandfather beyond.

Paul was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Clifford Rogers and his sisters, Margaret Rogers Austin and Mary Elizabeth Rogers.

Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2017.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 26, 2017 in the Freeman Chapel with Chaplain Jim Mueller officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Dr. Doyle Sager officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to First Baptist Church of Jefferson City or Heisinger Bluffs Benevolence Fund.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
