Obituary for Donald Smith

Donald  Smith
Donald L. Smith, age 80 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, March 2, 2017 at home surrounded by his family.

Don was born June 13, 1936 in Macon, Mo. the son of Lester and Nadine (Cross) Smith. He was married on August 23, 1958 in Macon, Mo. to Lillian Heidtmann.

He was a 1954 graduate of Macon High School and a 1958 graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia with a degree in Sociology.

Don was employed with the Missouri Dept. of Corrections for over thirty-seven years as a Case Worker, Assistant Superintendent at the Algoa Correctional Facility, as Director of the Diagnostic Center at the Missouri State Penitentiary, and retired in 1995 as Superintendent of the Fulton Reception and Diagnostic Center.

He was a member of the Jefferson Lodge No. 43, A.F. & A.M.

Don enjoyed fishing, knife collecting, listening to music, and reading. Most importantly, he cherished time with his family.

Survivors include: his wife of fifty-eight years, Lillian Smith; one daughter, Nancy O’Connor and her husband Mike of Columbia, Mo.; three grandchildren, Katherine O’Connor of Kansas City, Mo., Abigail O’Connor and Emily O’Connor, both of Columbia, Mo.; and dear friends, Tim and Lisa Tharp and their family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Evelyn Smith, one sister Carolyn Murr and husband Bill, and their son, Donald Murr.

Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 2:00 pm Monday, March 6, 2017 at Riverview Cemetery with the Reverend Rich Litzau officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Callaway Hills Animal Shelter or donor’s choice of an animal charity.
