Obituary for Marilyn Sommerer

Marilyn  Sommerer
Mrs. Marilyn I. Sommerer, age 85 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Heisinger Bluffs.

Marilyn was born May 8, 1931 in St. Louis, Mo. the daughter of Andrew and Joanna Panhorst. She was married on August 21, 1954 in St. Louis, Mo. to Otto Sommerer who preceded her in death on January 14, 2005.

Marilyn graduated from Beaumont High School in St. Louis, Mo. and attended Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois.

Marilyn and Otto lived in Murphysboro, Illinois for over thirty years, before returning to Jefferson City in 1997. She served as the church secretary at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Murphysboro, Illinois.

In her earlier years, she taught school at Immanuel Lutheran School in Honey Creek, Mo. and Trinity Lutheran School in Jefferson City.

Marilyn was a freelance writer of Christian stories, articles, poems, study materials and devotions for children and adults. Her children’s picture book, “The First Christmas Present,” was published by Concordia Publishing House in 2009.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society.

Marilyn enjoyed reading, cooking, and ME TV. Most importantly, she cherished her time with her family.

Survivors include: two children, Julie (Rodney) Sommerer Higginbotham of Chicago, Illinois and David (Ginger) Sommerer of Jefferson City, Mo.; one sister, Joan (Fred) Bargmann of Jefferson City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Tori (Lucas) Karr of Ashland, Mo., Rachel (Bob) Blanchard of Winter Garden, Florida, Joshua Sommerer and Matthew Sommerer both of Jefferson City, Mo.,and Alice Higginbotham and Margaret Higginbotham, both of Chicago, Illinois; one great-grandson, Grayson Karr of Ashland, Mo.; and 33 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and an infant daughter, Christy Sommerer.

Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 3:00 until 5:00 pm Sunday, March 5, 2017.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am Monday, March 6, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Reverend Russ Bowder and the Reverend Samuel Powell officiating. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Calvary Lutheran High School.
