Obituary for Rebecca Segovia

Rebecca Segovia
Colonel Rebecca Anita Segovia (MOARNG, ret.), age 55 years, of Jefferson City, Mo. went home to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at home surrounded by her family after a hard fought battle with cancer.

She was born on August 29, 1961 in Kansas City, Mo., a daughter of Moses and Naomi (Ojeda) Segovia.

Rebecca was a graduate of North East High School in Kansas City, Mo. and received her Bachelor’s degree in Fibers from the Kansas City Art Institute.

She faithfully served her country for 31 years in the Missouri Army National Guard, attaining the rank of Colonel in 2014 and retired on December 31, 2016. During her military career, she was the Director of the State Partnership Program between Missouri and Panama, Manager for the Command Language Program, and the Commander of the Missouri Army National Guard Medical Detachment.

Colonel Segovia deployed in support of Operation Noble Eagle (2002) and to Kosovo in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (2008-2009), serving as the Brigade Deputy Surgeon.

Colonel Segovia’s military awards include the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal and numerous other commendations during her extensive military career.

Rebecca was a faithful member of Capital City Christian Church and enjoyed serving on mission trips to Mexico and Central America. She was a member of the Missouri National Guard Association and Combat Boots and High Heels.

Rebecca was an extremely creative and talented woman, who fostered creativity in her children and grandchildren. She always saw the bright side of every situation and made time for others, no matter their need. She lived her life by her father’s advice that if you are going to do something, do it right. People will remember her for her thumbs up and signature red lipstick.

She is survived by: four children, Tyler Vance Cox (wife Elizabeth) of Fort Bragg, NC, Katie Marie Hastie (husband Andrew) of Marion, IL, Margaret Alanna Lister of Kansas City, MO and Karmen Diane Walling (husband Jason) of Holts Summit, MO; her mother, Naomi Segovia of Kansas City, MO; her siblings, Richard Segovia (wife Theresa) of Independence, MO, Terri Bly (husband Dan) of Kansas City, MO and Linda Segovia of Kansas City, MO; and nine grandchildren, Jake Walling, Ethan Walling, Hunter Walling, Thane Hastie, Vance Cox, Serendipity Hastie, Jerah Hastie, Elsiana Hastie and Raife Hastie.

She was preceded in death by her father, Moses Segovia on July 15, 2008.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday, January 16, 2017 at Capital City Christian Church, 1608 Swifts Highway, Jefferson City, MO 65109. Funeral services will be conducted at 5:00 pm Monday at the Capital City Christian Church with Pastor Andrew Hastie officiating.

Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Community Health Evangelism Network (CHE) for malaria education www.chenetwork.org.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
