Obituary for John Herold

John Herold
Mr. A. John Herold, III, age 70 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at his home.

John was born September 3, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois the son of Arthur J., Jr. and Mable (Gould) Herold. He was married on June 11, 1966 in Sparta, Michigan to Freda Nadich.

John served in the United States Marine Corps from 1963 until he was honorably discharged in 1964.

A resident of west Michigan for the majority of his life, John was employed as the head mechanic with Dietrich’s Farms, one of the largest apple farms in the country, for over thirty-five years prior to his retirement in May, 2011. From an early age, John loved to take things apart and put them back together. That is why he was so passionate about his job and stayed working on the farm his entire professional career. He was proud to work with four different generations of the Dietrich Family and they treated him as part of their family.

John was an active member of Grace Community Church in Jefferson City where he used his handy work ability to help around the church grounds. He enjoyed reading his Bible to further his faith and helped as a spiritual mentor to some in the congregation.

During any free time, John loved working on electronics, listening to music, astronomy, and rebuilding small engines. He moved to Jefferson City six years ago to retire to a warmer climate and be closer to his sisters.

Survivors include: his wife of fifty years, Freda Herold; five daughters, Deborah L. Farver and her husband Steven of Cedar Springs, Michigan, Jennifer L. Herold of Fremont, Michigan, Sandra J. Barr and her husband Jared of Rockford, Michigan, Karen M. Lain and her husband Ed of Kent City, Michigan, and Anita J. Heinbeck and her husband Andy of Comstock Park, Michigan; three sisters, Marie Campbell and her husband Ed of Ohio, Penny Jarden of Jefferson City, Mo., Cynthia Smith and her husband Tony of Holts Summit, Mo.; eighteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Kenneth John Herold; one sister, Jean Herold Wood; an infant granddaughter, Justean Barr; and a brother-in-law, Carl Jarden.

Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2016.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2016 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Dennis Helton officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, 1479 County Rd 1675, Jacksonville, MO 65260.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Grace Community Church, 621 B, East McCarty Street, Jefferson City, Mo. 65l0l.
