Norris E. Hughes, age 91 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the Capital Region Medical Center.
Norris was born November 11, 1925 in Cedar City, Mo. the son of J. Virgil and Lillian P. (Steinmetz) Hughes.
A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, Norris was employed with the Missouri Pacific Railroad with his father for a brief period and later with the Capital Theater. From 1967 until 1984, he was employed with the Missouri Department of Planning and Construction in maintenance.
He was member and unofficial greeter of the First United Methodist Church and proud member the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie 2693. He enjoyed the friends he met at the Methodist church and the Eagles and looked forward to going to these places frequently.
Norris’ main passion was being around people, especially spending time with his family. He always had a smile on his face and never knew a stranger. He prided himself on being very independent and was known for walking all over Jefferson City to work, church and other activities. He had his daily routines and loved his breakfast at McDonalds every morning and his lunch at Mel’s most days.
Norris brought the best out in people and was loved by so many. His family wants to thank the staff at McDonalds, the staff at Mel’s, friends and staff at the Eagles, the congregation at the Methodist church, and many special friends for the love they showed him these past years.
Survivors include: his sister-in-law, Norma Hughes of Jefferson City, Mo.; ten nieces and nephews, Rick (Jody) Hughes of Kansas City, Mo., Randy (Barb) Hughes of Jefferson City, Mo., Jana (Chris) Agniel of Camdenton, Mo., Doug (Leigh Anne) Hughes of Fulton, Mo., Denny (Carole) Hughes of Jefferson City, Mo., Rodney (Lori) Hughes of Jefferson City, Mo., Scott (Carly) Hughes of Bonnots Mill, Mo., Kip (Tessie) Hughes of Argyle, Mo., Brad (Andrea) Hughes of San Jose, California, and Julie (Mark) Conklin of Florida; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and many cousins and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard “Dick” Hughes; one sister, Velma Shelnutt; and one brother-in-law, Bill Shelnutt.
Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 am until 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, December 21, 2016.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, December 21, 2016 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Daniel Hilty officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at Riverview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or the American Diabetes Association.
