Obituary for Roberta Hubbs

Roberta Hubbs
Roberta Wilkerson Hubbs, age 76 years, of Jefferson City, Mo. passed away Monday, October 3, 2016 at home surrounded by her family and friends.

Roberta was born on September 23, 1940 in Cave City, Ar. the daughter of Robert and Bertha (Cobb) Wilkerson.

Roberta had an impressive academic career, graduating salutatorian from Ironton High School and earning a BSE degree from the University of Central Arkansas. In college she was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority and the T-Steppers dance team. From Lincoln University she held a master’s degree in counseling and an education specialist degree in school leadership.

Roberta was the consummate professional for 35 years, an educator devoted to children at Advance Public Schools, Fatima High School in Westphalia, and Jefferson City Public Schools. She worked in the Jefferson City Public Schools for 24 years, most notably as the Principal at Thomas Jefferson Middle School for over 10 years until her retirement on June 30, 2014. She worked tirelessly to improve education, and she influenced, encouraged, and inspired countless lives in the Central Missouri area.

She had a life full of favorites, mostly her family and her role as “YiaYia”. She also loved music, walking in the snow, fall golf, gardening, and beach trips. She was uniquely engaged with whomever and whatever was in the present and legitimately earned the reputation of never meeting a stranger. She developed many strong, loyal, and lasting friendships, and she showed up when it counted most. Without her, the King Biscuit Blues Festival will never be the same.

She was a volunteer with the Buddy Pack Program through the Food Bank, a member of the Jefferson City Century Study Club, and a 50-year active member of Wesley United Methodist Church, serving there in numerous capacities including many years as pianist and organist.

She is survived by her family to whom she was devoted: daughters, Sarah Swanson and her husband Garth of New Orleans, La. and Jane Emily Hubbs of Columbia, Mo.; granddaughter, Elizabeth Hubbs and her fiancé Jake Blackburn of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Loretta Whitney and her husband Guy of Conway, Ar.; nieces, Mandy, Michele, JJ, and Katie; nephew, Guy, III; and a host of extended family, friends, and her grand-dog, Jack.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, James Cobb Wilkerson.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 2727 Wesley Street, Jefferson City, Mo. 65109.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the Wesley United Methodist Church with the Reverend JJ Whitney and the Reverend Tom Vansant officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri, 2101 Vandiver Drive, Columbia, Mo. 65202.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
