Obituary for Joe Wilson

Joe Wilson
Joe Russell Wilson, age 74 years, of Jefferson City, MO passed away after a battle with cancer in the early morning hours on Wednesday, September 21 at his son’s home surrounded by family.

He was born July 31, 1942 to Orus & Esther (Moseley) Wilson in Springfield, MO. A lifelong resident of the central Missouri area, Joe was a 1961 graduate of Jefferson City High School and attended Lincoln University and Southwest Missouri State University.

From his union with Judith Northway came five sons. Joe had a true coach’s heart and always loved teaching others. He took pride in coaching his sons in football, baseball and boxing, and also started the Capital City Boxing Club. He had a gift for encouraging and bringing out the best in the underdog.

Joe was a jack of all trades and self-employed to ensure the ability to make his own hours. He sold water softeners, had his own cleaning service, and worked as a logger among other jobs throughout his professional career. Joe’s true passions were rescuing dogs (and finding perfect placement for each canine), and the great outdoors. He passed on his love of nature to his sons and grandchildren whom enjoy hunting and fishing.

A community activist and conservationist, he is noted for the creation of Wilson’s Serenity Point (WSP) at Noren Access where he was able to combine his love of community, nature, dogs, family, friends, paddlers, and the majestic Missouri River. Joe loved to sit by a campfire telling stories and playing guitar (original songs, and classics). He was actively involved in the MR340, Missouri River Relief, and acted as a local “River Angel.”

Mr. Wilson is survived by sons, Russell (Mary) Wilson of Russellville, Mo., Eric Wilson (Dayla Penn) of Jefferson City, Mo., Allen Wilson (Tena) of California Mo., Justin Wilson of Jefferson City, Mo. and Kip Wilson of Jefferson City, Mo.; three brothers, Donald Wilson of Jefferson City, Mo., Ted Wilson (Louise) of Jefferson City, Mo., and Larry Wilson of Lynchburg, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Victoria Wilson, Samantha Wilson, Kaleb Joe Wilson, Elliot Wilson, Paige Wilson, Austin Wilson, Arjay Wilson, and great granddaughter, Avery Ayala.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Kay, parents, and sister in law, Nancy Wilson.

A memorial service will be conducted at Wilson’s Serenity Point at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Missouri River Relief http://www.riverrelief.org/

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.

Joe will be missed by his friends, family, and “river family.” When you visit WSP, you will see him in the sun, feel him in the breeze, and hear his song as the river flows. As Joe always said, “See You at the River!”
