Obituary for Geneva Shock
Mrs. Geneva R. Shock, age 93 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., formerly of California, passed away Friday, July 29, 2016 surrounded by family at her daughter’s home in Columbia, Mo.
Geneva was born in her grandmother’s house near Keytesville, Mo. on October 14, 1922 a daughter of Lloyd McDonald and Mary Elizabeth (Berry) Bishop.
She attended schools at Ridgeway Elementary School in Columbia, Murray Grade School and Hickman High School, graduating in May 1939 at the age of 16. She attended the former Orten and Rice Business College.
She was married in the home of Rev. J. Bryson in Columbia, Mo. on November 27, 1942 to Private Edward M. Shock, who preceded her in death on May 30, 2011. In February 1943, she moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to be closer to her husband while stationed at Camp Shelby, and she returned to central Missouri after his deployment overseas during World War II.
Geneva was employed at Charles E. Still Hospital for 15 years until her retirement on May 4, 1984. Previously, she had worked in bookkeeping with Missouri Utilities of Eldon and Wright-Price Bookkeeping and Tax Company. Geneva possessed a strong work ethic from an early age and was proud to start her professional career as a bookkeeper and retired as comptroller of Charles E. Still Hospital.
She was a member of a non-denominational Christian Church in Jefferson City and was a member of the United Commercial Travelers, a fraternal organization working with the Sheltered Workshop and various cancer organizations.
Geneva was an amazing cook and loved cooking for family gatherings when she was able. She was a talented seamstress and quilter and enjoyed studying her family genealogy.
Survivors include: four daughters, Edwena Shock of California, Mo., Vivian Whitney of Jefferson City, Mo., Patty Crane (husband Tiry) of Columbia, Mo. and Linda Matteson (husband Joseph) of Columbia, Mo.; three grandchildren, Brad O’Neal (wife Susan) of Marshall, Mo., Stephanie Beck (husband Brian) of San Diego, California and Cory Whitney (wife Laura) of Lenexa, Kansas; five step grandchildren, Tiry Crane II (wife Dana) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Lacy Crane of Udall, Kansas, Christy McDow (husband Mark) of Ashland, Mo., Cindy Falco (husband Joseph) of Columbia, Mo. and Jessica Kiesling (fiancé Quinton Gano) of California, Mo.; three great-grandchildren, Abbey and Emily O’Neal and Madeline Whitney; ten step great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Rosemary Bishop of Centertown, Mo., Shirley Shock of Ashland, Mo. and Sue Fenton of Columbia, Mo.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ed; two brothers, Ray Bishop (wife Marjorie) and Edward Bishop (wife Juanita); and one sister, Virginia Williamson (husband Melvin).
Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2016.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2016 in the Freeman Chapel. Graveside services and interment will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Grandview Cemetery near Murry, Mo.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the National Federation for the Blind or the Grandview Cemetery Association.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
